Have you heard about the Hoodoos near Edson, Alberta? Curious how to get to them? Or are you wondering “are these hoodoos really worth the trouble to see”!?

Many of you have probably seen the famous badlands pictures of the odd shaped formations around Drumheller, Alberta. But, there are other places in Alberta to find Hoodoos too! If you find yourself close to Edson (within a couple hours drive from Jasper), you need to visit the Wild Sculptures Interpretive Trail in Sundance Provincial Park. Wild Sculptures is just a fancy name for – you guessed it! – Hoodoos!

Read on to find out exactly everything you need to know to find and enjoy this lovely trail and the oddly placed hoodoos!

Where the Edson Hoodoos are located

The Hoodoos are located in Sundance Provincial Park between Edson and Hinton and North off of Highway 16. With good conditions, it takes about 45 mins to an hour to reach the trailhead from Edson and I would estimate slightly longer from Hinton, Alberta.

Sundance Park is a secluded area comprised of dirt roads and not much traffic. Be sure to have plenty of fuel, snacks, water and whatever else you may need before leaving town. Carry Bear Spray as well!

How to reach the Sundance Park Hoodoos Trailhead

Directions to the Wild Sculptures Interpretive Trail from Highway 16 (Trans Canada Highway):

–Turn north onto the south Swanson Road (gravel) and keep on it until you reach a “T”

–Turn left at the T (Emerson Road)

–Soon you will see a sign for the “Wild Sculptures Interpretive Trail” and the entrance will be on your left

Alternatively, you can take Emerson Trail if coming from Hinton (off of highway 16) but it is more confusing. There are several “Y’s” in the road and sometimes it is hard to guess if you are still on the “main” road or not. Due to my brother’s directions, we took Emerson Trail on the way out (from Edson) but drove the easier South Swanson route on the way back.

Interesting Info about the Park

Strangely, several species of orchids and even some carnivorous plants can be found in the Marl Bog area of the trail!! This seems like quite a phenomenon for this neck of the woods!

Facilities at Wild Sculptures Interpretive Trail

Once arrived, a parking lot with outhouses is at the start of the Interpretive Trail. Also at the trailhead, is a map. The route starts out as one trail but veers off onto different ones – hoodoo trail, skyline, and lake trail. If you choose to explore all the trails, expect to walk 8 km one way.

The “Hoodoo” Trail in Sundance Provincial Park

Length: Just over 1 km to the first hoodoos. Head back or continue down through the forest to 3 serene lakes.

Difficulty: Easy

After a leisurely 1 km, the first set of hoodoos come in sight. The hoodoos are magnificent! Scrambling around and on top of the rocky formations, the older kids had a blast. I may have been nervous when they got close to the edges, but everyone survived!

Once we hit the 2nd conglomerate of sandstone formations, we climbed up to the skyline trail and took the ridge back for a different view of the area. We could also spot a couple of the lakes through the trees in the valley below. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time to explore further and see the lakes up close! Next time!

The area was absolutely peaceful. Although the trails themselves were quite easy, much of it was on a steep hillside so watch out if you have littles in tow. I was glad to have a baby carrier so I didn’t have to stress about baby falling down the steeply treed slope!

Other things to do in Sundance Provincial Park

Sundance Provincial Park is comprised of the Sundance Valley area by Sundance Creek and the 5 Emerson Lakes.

Emerson Lakes & Campground

There are 7 kilometers worth of hiking trails around 3 of the Emerson Lakes (5 lakes in total). Boating or fishing is allowed. Plus, there is also a campground! The campground is un-serviced, but has firewood, water pump, and outhouses.

The Emerson Lakes are only 56 kms from Hinton.

Concluding thoughts on the Edson Hoodoo Hike

I grew up in Edson and had always heard about the Hoodoos not far from town. But other than the knowledge that it was a short hike in to see the odd formations, I never realized how interesting or beautiful this area actually was. After going myself, I was quite surprised that more people didn’t know about this secluded yet beautiful park and it’s paths. Sundance Provincial Park is the perfect place to unwind and unplug away from it all. And, though it doesn’t seem like the right landscape for them, there are hoodoos too. Oddly placed perhaps, but quite a delightful surprise in a pristine, poplar-dense woods.

If you are on a Hoodoo hunt, you can find plenty more on a trip to Drumheller, Alberta. However, Drumheller is not off the beaten path like this middle-of-the-woods destination!

Are you looking for some easy hikes in Grande Cache that you can do with the family?  Well, you are in luck.  Grande Cache, Alberta is known mostly for the Death Race and long, often steep, back-country hikes.  However, there are a few shorter hikes (mainly to waterfalls) that are great for families.  And being only about an hour and a half drive from Grande Prairie, it makes for a great day trip from the northern city.  So grab the kids and check out the wild, rugged, scenery of Grande Cache.  Similar to Jasper with beautiful mountains, and jewel-hued rivers except without the crowds.  

While Grande Cache has many amazing hikes, I find the majority are classified as 'hard' or are just too long for the kiddos.  These 5 easy, family-friendly Grande Cache hikes should be do-able with kids of all ages.  Generally, these trails can be done within 10 minutes to 3 hours.

Dinosaur Trail RV Resort & Cabins – Only Drumheller Campground with a pool!

Located between the Royal Tyrell Museum and HorseThief Canyon, Dinosaur Trail RV Resort & Cabins is the only campground in Drumheller with a pool!

Also, it has over 200 hundred sites (both treed and open), along with pull-through, big rig friendly, and tenting sites! Otherwise, if you don’t have a RV, cabins (with A/C) are available to rent! The largest cabin being able to accommodate up to 6 people.

There are so many amenities and lots of activities for the kids. I hear they even have pancake breakfasts and family movie nights…

River Grove Campground & Cabins – in Drumheller

This in-town option, is beside the river and just across the bridge from the giant T-Rex. Likewise, Drumheller’s spray park, and pools (outdoor and indoor) are also beside the info centre along with the world’s largest dinosaur.

In brief, RV sites, tent sites, cabins, and even a trailer is available to rent. Sites are shaded as they are nestled in the giant trees beside the Red Deer River. Pull-through sites are also available.

Additionally, the following amenities are on-site:

• Playground, Horseshoe pits, and arcade!
• Unserviced to fully services sites
• Convenience store
• Washrooms, coin showers, coin laundry, dish-washing sinks (with hot water)
• Sani dump

Dinosaur RV Park – in Drumheller

Another RV park located in Drumheller. Just slightly further than the River Grove Campground but also within walking distance of downtown.

Similar to the other in-town campground, there are RV and tenting sites along with Cabins for rent (starting at $199/nt). Another plus for those with little ones, a creek runs through the amenity-filled property.

• 2 Playgrounds, 2 mini golf courses, arcade, and outdoor movies
• Washrooms, fire pits, coin showers, coin laundry

Pinters Campground – Private & River Access (May be closed!)

Located close to Rosedale, Pinters has more privacy and room than most the campgrounds on this list. With plenty of large cottonwood trees, campers also have access to the river and beach. People noted that it was a great price, however there are only outhouses on site for toilets. Some complained that they were treated rudely by campground operators for having too many kids/ family members in one site.

Hoodoo RV Resort & Campground – Drumheller Campground with most Space & Best Views

One of the highest rated campgrounds in Drumheller, Hoodoo RV Resort & Campground is located off Highway 10 across from the Hoodoo Trail. On the edge of the river, this resort and campground offers lots of space and undoubtedly some of the best views of the badlands!

Other amenities include:

• Tenting sites, service & non serviced sites
• 2 playgrounds, soccer field, baseball diamond, volleyball
• Indoor washrooms, coin showers
• Off leash dog area
• River access with picnic area
• 2 Sani-dumps ($10 to dump)

Badlands Campground

Another campground close to Drumheller is Badlands Campground. Being small and simple, this campground isn’t mentioned much, however it is quaint and quiet. Located on the river banks, there are river walking trails nearby and all proceeds go to the Badlands Amphitheatre and support the arts.

11 Bridges Campground – Rosedale

Another small campground, this one is located in Rosedale next to the river. Check out the 11 Bridges Campground website to see pictures – unsurprisingly for this area, it looks beautiful! The ice cream store is also walking distance away. Rustic cabins are available for rent – no power or water but they start at only $90/nt! Located about 10 minutes from Drumheller.

Bleriot Ferry Campground

Rustic campground close to the Bleriot Ferry – thus the name. Located on the banks of the Red Deer River with un-serviced, and therefore, cheap sites. Plenty of trees and nature! But, bring your own firewood and water. Water is not potable here.

• Un-serviced sites
• River access for canoeing, kayaking, or floating

Horseshoe Canyon Campground

Directly across the road from popular Horseshoe Canyon sits the Horseshoe Canyon Campground. Thus, this large, amenity-rich campground is walking distance to the canyon and hiking! There are not a lot of trees around the campsites though, so don’t expect much shade!

Following is some of what Horseshoe Canyon Campground has to offer:

• Mini golf, beach volleyball court, horse shoes, playground & ice cream!
• Fits all rig sizes, serviced and tenting sites (some tenting sites have power & water!)
• Pet friendly

Extra: Drumheller Lions Campground – Group only

Interestingly, this is a group site only. However, their facebook page notes that you get about 8 acres of space! Also, there are ball diamonds, fire pits, outhouses and a cook house. Don’t expect hookups, water, or individual sites though. Message the facebook page for bookings.

Bonus: Drumheller Campgrounds further out

Little Fish Lake Campground

A small, un-serviced campground available on a first come, first serve basis. Only pit toilets, fire pits, and unpotable water are on site. Thus, you will need to bring your own firewood and water. More info here.

High Eagle RV Park – Rosebud

Located in Rosebud along the Rosebud river. Conveniently, treed and even riverfront sites are offered within walking distance to the dinner theatre and all Rosebud has to offer. Call the number on their website to reserve.

• Power & water sites; no tent sites
• Group area, ice, convenience store
• Washrooms & showers, sani-dump

Wayne Campground

With little shade or privacy, Wayne campground has all the basics including a playground. Plus, it can be reserved for group or family events. Drinking water, horseshoes, outhouses, camp kitchen and event hall can all be found here. Facebook page for the campground

Additionally, the Last Chance Saloon has a few campsites as well (also lacking privacy…but it is a small community!) Luckily, if you get tired of camping or cooking there is a hotel and great food right there! They can cater and also hold up to 350 people in their venue. Book a campsite here!

Pope Lease Pines RV Resort

This campground and B&B seems very private with even seasonal sites available. Pope Lease Pines (doesn’t this seem like an odd name?) looks like a neat place with cabins on the prairie and some fun amenities. Facebook page is here.

The Vignette at Handhills Hideaway

A RV Resort about 35 kms from Drumheller with prairie views and wide open skies. Plenty of privacy, yet lots to do. Mini Golf, Volleyball, Basketball, playground, trout pond, horseshoes and more. Sign up for a membership or weekly stay. Visit their website for more info.

It is almost as if a giant knife cut open the farmland to show an arid, foreign, landscape below.  And with cacti growing everywhere?!  Is this really Alberta? It certainly looked like a place where dinosaurs once roamed…

Where is Drumheller, Alberta?

Where exactly is Drumheller? The small town is located in southeastern Alberta, about an hour and a half drive from Calgary (about 130 kms) or about 3 hours from Edmonton (roughly 280 kms).

Depending on your route, there may not be many gas stations (or anything!) so plan ahead and fill up! The drive is beautiful and quiet, whichever road you take…surrounded by miles of farmland. Enjoy the descent into Drumheller…it is unexpected!

Weather for Drumheller

As with anywhere in Alberta, Drumheller weather can be unpredictable! However, the best time of year to visit would be any season except winter! Of course it will be busiest, hottest and more attractions open in the summer. So pack warm clothes and rain gear. It is better to be prepared so you can still enjoy all Drumheller has to offer without being wet or cold!

Where to Stay in Drumheller

#1 tip – book accommodation ahead! Especially if you are visiting Drumheller in the summer. In my normal last minute planning style, I waited until the week before we planned to go and ALL hotels were booked up!

However, saved my butt. I managed to find a cute little duplex with 2 bedrooms, plenty of space, and everything we needed close to downtown and the giant T-Rex/Visitor Center. But I’ll give you all the deets (and pics) down below…

Vacation Rentals in Drumheller

If you are traveling with a family (or large group), I highly recommend looking for a . You can often save a lot of money if you were to need more than one hotel room. Even if you aren’t, you may prefer the homey-ness of an Airbnb. We had my in-laws visiting, plus our 4 kids. So with a crew of 8, it made more sense to rent a home.

Our Drumheller Vacation Rental – 2 Bedroom!

The cozy duplex we rented was open and roomy. It was also one of the most affordable options for our crew of 8!

The living room sofa turned into a bed that was plenty big for our 3 kids (all 8 and under), my in-laws took one bedroom and we took the other with baby (I brought my pack n play). The kitchen had a kettle, tea, coffee and the basics along with everything to cook a meal.

Drumheller Hotels

If I needed a , I would be sure to look for a hotel with a pool! Because what kid doesn’t love to swim??! Out of the several hotels in Drumheller, only 2 have pools – and they both have waterslides!

Drumheller Hotels with Pools:

• SureStay Plus Hotel by Best Western Drumheller

The SureStay besides having a pool (and water slide) also has a hot tub, free continental breakfast, and family rooms that can fit up to 8 people!

• Ramada by Wyndham Drumheller Hotel & Suites

Much like the SureStay, the Ramada Drumheller has a pool with water slide and hot tub and free continental breakfast. However, their largest room holds only 5.

There are also more hotel options in the neighboring towns of Hanna and Three Hills and more budget options in Drumheller if you don’t care about a pool.

Campsites in Drumheller

There are plenty of Camping options around Drumheller. Two campgrounds are right in town – walking distance to the visitor information center, giant T-Rex, and the splash park/pools.

As well, there are several campgrounds outside of Drumheller. One campground even has a heated swimming pool!

Day 1 – Drumheller Itinerary

Our first day in Drumheller was full of activities…after all, gotta keep those kids busy!  Don’t forget to book your Tyrell Museum tickets ahead of time!  If it is supposed to be a hot day, you may want to get up early so you can explore Horseshoe Canyon without boiling!

Visit Horseshoe Canyon, the Drumheller Visitor Info Centre, Royal Tyrrell Museum & Interpretive Trail, Tiny Church, HorseThief Canyon, Bleriot Ferry, and Orkney Lookout.  If you want more time to hike at the canyons, save Horseshoe Canyon for Day 2 and start with the Visitor Centre or the Dinosaur Museum.

Horseshoe Canyon Drumhellar

• Outhouses on Site
• Several lookouts
• Large parking lot
• Wide, easy to follow trail down into and through the canyon

If you are coming from Calgary, stop at Horseshoe Canyon (before reaching Drumheller). This canyon offers some of the best Drumheller badlands views and has a great wide trail.

The descent down into the canyon is either a wide graveled staircase or a slope. I brought my baby stroller down (yes, there was a baby in it) but went backwards since the grade was a little steep. On the way up, I pulled it up on the back two wheels…easier with all that gravel. So if you have a stroller – it can be done. Although a baby carrier would have been easier.

The walk through the canyon was beautiful and the kids loved running up the chiseled formations. Keep an eye out for the ground hogs…they are everywhere!

Drumheller Visitor Center & the Giant T-Rex

• Lookout from the mouth of the world’s largest T-Rex
• Souvenirs, maps, area info
• Public Washrooms
• Next to outdoor splash pad and outdoor pool

If you need to get your bearings, the perfect first place to stop is the Drumheller Visitor or Information Center. They have maps and all the info you will need to get around.

The place is also full of souvenirs and you can climb up inside the giant T-Rex’s mouth to get a view of Drumheller. T-Rex entry is $5 per person. There are also public washrooms in case you need an emergency stop like us!

**Keep in mind – the outdoor pool and splash park are located here as well…you might want to visit if it is a hot day.

Royal Tyrrell Museum & Interpretive Trail

• One of the largest dinosaur museums in the world!
• Big outdoor playground
• picnic tables
• food truck
• Interpretive trail through the badlands
• Lookout

The Royal Tyrrell Dinosaur Museum was incredible! Seeing all the full-sized fossils was exhilarating and somewhat mind-blowing. Remember to book your entrance time and tickets ahead.

**Be aware- the museum is closed on MONDAYS unless it is a holiday.

We had snacks that we brought while the kids played on the playground. But, there was also a food truck on site. The museum’s cafeteria was closed (August 2021).

Afterward, we took the easy stroll on the interpretive trail that goes through the drumheller badlands behind the museum. The trail was wide and easy so we could navigate it with the stroller.

The kids poked sticks in every hole they saw since I had told them not to put any hands in…in case it was occupied by a rattle snake! Instead of being afraid, they were intent on finding one!

Don’t skip taking all those stairs up to the lookout beside the museum. It is a great view of the surrounding badlands and good exercise!

Tiny Church Drumheller

After visiting the museum, keep going away from town on highway 838 (or North Dinosaur Trail) and you will quickly see the Little Church on the side of the road. Stop for some quick pics with the world’s tiniest church!

We completely ripped by and therefore missed the photo shoot…but I hadn’t realized the tiny church was located on the same road (just past) the dinosaur museum.

HorseThief Canyon

• Outhouses on site

Unfortunately, the weather was quite blustery and cold when we arrived at HorseThief Canyon (just further down the North Dinosaur Trail). However the view was beautiful! And if everyone wasn’t starving, we may have done some hiking. But, I only saw steep trails leading down into the canyon, so it may have been tricky carrying a baby.

Some recommendations from AllTrails include: wear good footware, avoid when rainy or wet (the clay can get quite gross), bring lots of water, wear sunscreen if hot and bug repellent!

Apparently there is a dried creek bed, caves, and some big hoodoos. There are plenty of footpaths all over to explore on your own but no signs. Have fun!

Bleriot Ferry

Back on the road, we quickly hit a stop sign. Turn left to stay on Dinosaur Trail (sign for Bleriot Ferry). The road will take you directly to the ferry crossing…wait in line until it is your turn to board then enjoy crossing (it is SLOWWW – but the kids enjoyed it) the Red Deer River.

Interesting fact – it is the last cable operated ferry in Alberta!

Orkney Lookout

• Clean Outhouses
• Benches

Once across the ferry, drive until you reach a “T” this is highway 837 or South Dinosaur Trail. Turn left towards Drumheller. Shortly, a sign will announce the road for Orkney Viewpoint.

Orkney Lookout is a beautiful viewpoint over the red deer river valley and drumheller badlands. Google reviewers say not to miss this spot…but we did because- yes! THE KIDS WERE STILL STARVING!

Now it’s time to get dinner (we hit up Boston Pizza) and relax! Day 2 is just as full!

Day 2 – Drumheller Itinerary

Breakfast. I’m sure that is the first thing my kids think about as they bounce out of bed. Like usual, we rushed to get ready for the day of exploration, and tore out the door. After all, we had to get the gremlins fed!

We headed to Whifs Flapjack House which was jam-packed when we arrived. The wait wasn’t long, however. Running around the ceiling was a model train which kept the kids occupied while we ordered.

Most of the breakfasts were very good, however my crepes were quite dry – they weren’t filled with anything…simply stacked with a small amount of berries and whip cream on top. *The potato pancakes have been strongly recommended by a patron on trip advisor though!

Now on to Atlas Coal Mine, Hoodoos Trail, and The 11 Bridges Route. If you want to do more hiking, or missed a canyon from yesterday, squeeze it in on day 2!

Atlas Coal Mine Historic Site

Head down highway 56 (turns into hwy 10) out of town towards Rosedale for about 22 km. A sign will direct you to turn right for Atlas Coal Mine, cross the bridge, then make another right. Super easy to get to and you can see it from the highway.

A great historical site of a large underground coal mine. Plenty of history and stories- both inspiring and terrible – and great artifacts. The kids loved exploring all the different buildings! My favorite was the wash house!

Hoodoos Trail

One of the most popular of Drumheller’s badlands hikes, the Hoodoos Trail will not disappoint. Heading back towards Drumheller you will see the sign for the drumheller hoodoos hike and be able to see them from the road.

• Outhouses on site
• Food truck was on site when we went in August
• $2 per vehicle parking fee

The hoodoos here are incredible and the kids had a blast. Be aware though, when wet, some of that clay gets super mucky, sticky, and slick! Unfortunately we hit one of those days…I’ll just say hubs was not impressed.

11 Bridges Route to Wayne

At Rosedale, turn onto highway 10x – also known as the 11 bridges route. This short route has a world record for having the most bridges in such a short distance. 11 bridges in a measly 6 kilometers! The kidlets had great fun counting all the bridges on the drive.

Turn around when the road turns to gravel (or at Wayne). Stop at the Last Chance Saloon and try some of the best ice cream in the area. Wayne is also a ghost town with only a few residents left after the coal mine closures.

Things to Do in Drumheller – missed on our Itinerary!

There are plenty of things we weren’t able to do in our short visit to Drumheller! We could have easily spent a few more days or so exploring this area.  Without further ado, here are just a few more Drumheller activities.

Star Mine Suspension Bridge

The Star Mine Suspension Bridge was temporarily closed in summer 2021. But if it opens up again (which it is supposed to), I would definitely add it to your Drumheller itinerary. The bridge is just outside of Rosedale.

Originally, the suspension bridge was built across the Red Deer River to allow the coal miners access to Star Mine from Rosedale. Now, there is some history at the old mine site and a few short trails. But, the heart pounder may be crossing the long, often-swaying, suspension bridge itself…especially if you’re leery of heights!

Newcastle Beach

Kind of a hidden (and non busy) spot on the river, close to downtown Drumheller. A good beach to cool down on a hot day but don’t expect a fine-sanded tropical oasis.

Interesting fact: There are also Crayfish (or Crawfish) in the river! Bring a net – maybe you can catch enough for a Crawfish boil! Here is a website on where to find Crayfish around Calgary, but also How to cook them!

Helicopter Tours & Paddle the Red Deer River

Paddle down the Red Deer River with Red Deer River Adventures. They offer tours or rent a canoe or kayak. What a relaxing way to see the Drumheller badlands!

Want to see the impressive landscape from the air? Go on a helicopter tour at Horseshoe Canyon or Cactus Coulee Fun Park.

Cactus Coulee Fun Park

Cactus Coulee Fun Park has go-karts, mini golf, euro bungy, and ice cream. Or you can hop on a helicopter tour here. They also have a campground. TripAdvisor has mixed reviews on this place – some say it is overpriced and may have had issues with staff while others say it is alot of fun!

Barney’s Adventure Park

With 30+ things to do at this newly opened park, there is too much to list. Think corn mazes, pig races, zip lines, karts and all kinds of kid fun! Check out the website and rates here.

Badlands Amphitheatre in Drumheller

Perhaps best known for the yearly “Passion Play” in Drumheller, the Badlands Amphitheatre also hosts other events over the summer. Apparently, the Drumheller Amphitheatre is the largest outdoor stage in Canada. Find out about upcoming events here.

Have more time on your hands? Explore these nearby towns and attractions close to Drumheller.

Rosebud

About 35 kms from Drumheller, Rosebud is a cute, westerny, town with a top-notch dinner theatre. Read about some of the town’s history at the Rosebud museum then take a walking tour before relaxing with amazing food and a spectacular show at the Rosebud Theatre. Make sure to get your tickets ahead of time!

Interesting fact: Rosebud was found by an explorer who saw the valley when it was full of blooming roses, thus its name was born!

Rowley

Ghost town…need I say more? Currently the town only has a few residents (around 8 or 9) and is thought to be haunted! It is located about 38 kms from Drumheller.

Pre-covid, the town association held pizza night usually on the last saturday of the month along with live music. Check out their facebook page to see when it is being held again.

The old buildings are in great shape and the town has an old-fashioned playground. Some TripAdvisor reviews note that some of the mannequins in the old buildings are quite creepy…but that might be right up your alley?! Creepy or not, the well maintained historical buildings in Rowley have some interesting history.

Rumsey Natural Area

If you visit Rowley, you can stop at the nearby Rumsey Natural Area. The area is quiet and secluded and is a great spot for bird watching. The Rumsey Natural Area was created to protect some of the areas native grassland and rare topography.

Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park

Located along the red door river, these scenic badlands are the site of an ancient buffalo jump. Day Use only and if it is rainy, the entrance road may be closed as it becomes dangerous and slippery. About a 94 km drive from Drumheller.

There is great hiking, small hoodoos, and much less traffic than Drumheller and area. Trails are unmarked but if you head to AllTrails there is a map that can be downloaded of a 7 km hike. Otherwise just follow the goat trails!

Apparently the river is quite shallow and calm at Dry Island Buffalo Jump and would be a great swim spot in the summer. Or, according to HikeBikeTravel, you can start a easy 2 day canoe to Drumheller here.

Good Knights Medieval Encampment & The Burrows

About 40 mins from Drumheller, near the town of Three Hills, is a Medieval Encampment! If you are looking to glamp (camp in glamour) in a medieval tent and be treated like royalty, this is the place to do it!

Activities, breakfast served at your tent, and even a medieval feast are included in your stay if you happen to be there on a saturday night. Archery, sword classes, medieval crafts, medieval attire, and photo opportunities. If you don’t want to stay the night, one sunday per month there is a royal feast along with entertainment open to the public. Check out the Feast page for more info.

Note: These guys are also creating a hobbit house built into the hillside! The first of “The Burrows“, as they are called, should be ready for booking this season (2022)!

Conclusion

Now that you know how to get to Drumheller, where to stay, and what to do, I hope you have a blast!  Our kids, and all the adults, certainly enjoyed this ancient dinosaur valley.  The picturesque landscape is unique and you will not run out of things to do and see for days! 

If you only have 2 days – follow my itinerary to see some of the best sights in Drumheller.  But if you have the time, I recommend relaxing, staying longer, and seeing more.  I wish we would have.  But, we will be back!  See you soon Drumheller!

Nicole doesn’t like to sleep. And, obviously she thinks I get too much of it too! Because she confidently suggested we meet at Tim’s at 6:45 am before starting our drive out of Grande Prairie! (I may have been 10 minutes late…) And it was worth it…

How far is Shaws Point from Grande Prairie?

Shaws Point Resort is located roughly 2.5 hours drive from GP! I suggest leaving early so you can stake a spot on the popular beach! You will need to drive past the town of High Prairie to reach the private camping resort. Located on the large well-known Lesser Slave Lake!

Directions from Grande Prairie to Shaws Point Resort

Drive past the town of High Prairie and through Grouard. There will be signs posted for Shaws Point Resort and Hilliards Bay Provincial Park. Both are located close to each other.

More Precise Driving Directions:

1. From Grande Prairie, take hwy 43 to Valleyview
2. Turn left onto hwy 49 (sign for Peace River; stay on for about 47 kms)
3. Turn right onto hwy 2A (signs for High Prairie)
4. After driving through High Prairie, turn left onto hwy 750 towards Grouard
5. Not far past Grouard, turn right onto Willow Point Road
6. Follow the signs to Shaws Point Resort

Is the Beach really worth the drive?

So, is the beach at Shaws Point Resort really worth the semi-long drive? Well, I definitely think so! The sand is fine and the lake bottom is sand as well! It is also a gradual, shallow entry into the lake which makes it perfect for babies and young kids. It was nice to let my baby crawl around without worrying about rocks!

By the way, if you need more floaties, we love these from Amazon! (They were around $10 when I bought them in 2016!)

But I’ll let you decide how nice it is from the pictures below!

Note: Hilliard’s Bay also has a sandy beach! Next time, I will take a look to see how it compares to the beach at Shaws Point!

Amenities at Shaws Point

Shaws Point Resort is a private campground resort. There is a restaurant, fish cleaning stations, shower and bathroom buildings, a playground, and several marinas. Also, laundry facilities and boat rentals are on site. Boats can be rented for as little as $30/hr! I believe there is also a shop with everything you could possibly need for sale…or so I’ve heard online.

There is also an open-air market every Saturday from 9 am – 2 pm!

Many of the camping lots are seasonal but the rest are available on a first come first serve basis. The general public may also enter but you will need to pay a $15 fee (per vehicle) at the gated entrance.

Can I Stay Overnight There?

Besides campsites, the resort also offers a few cabins for rent. They vary in price from $100 – $150 per night.

Other interesting places Enroute

On the drive I noticed a couple places of interest…all close to High Prairie.

EC Bar Ranch Adventures – Private bookings available during the summer for their giant slip n slide. Corn maze and pumpkin patch open during the Fall!

Shady Orchard & Winery – I’ve tried a couple different shady wines and loved them! Very fruity and perfect for summer! You might want to grab a bottle for the lake! Their shop is open tuesday – saturday.

Day Trip Summary

Definitely check out this beach spot! You will be happy you did! The beach is amazing and there are several amenities. Didn’t pack food? There is a onsite restaurant. Want to stay the night? Rent a cabin! We went on a scorching hot day and couldn’t get enough of the water! The only thing I would do different is stay LONGER! I will definitely either camp, or rent a cabin or hotel next time.

State & Main Kitchen & Bar Patio

State & Main’s south side patio gets sun all day! So if you’re lacking vitamin D or just need some heat, give them a visit and try out some summer specials. What about the Royal Bangkok Bowl and Spicy Thai Salad (did they know my favorite food is asian??!) Or, if beer and a steak sandwich is more your thing, they have that too. Happy hour is 2-5 pm; 9 pm-close.

Earls Grande Prairie Patio

The Earls Grande Prairie patio can be used year round with rolling glass garage doors that can be raised in the summer. This seating area is always beautifully decorated and feels like a lush oasis with greenery, hanging lights, and water features. And for cooler days, there are heaters! The patio at Earls in Grande Prairie is definitely one of my favorites in this city!

Earls has daily specials, but we especially like their happy hour menu (everyday from 2-5 pm; and 9pm -close) which has some fantastic deals! Check out their online menu here.

Our kids often get margherita pizzas for less than 5 bucks and I love the 3 Street Chicken Tacos!

Browns SocialHouse Patio – GP

Check out Browns patio and try their amazing eats! They will be adding new furniture to their patio soon!

I love the variety of food on the menu at Browns SocialHouse. My hubby can opt for his favorite go-to (a burger!) while I can get an asian inspired Dragon Bowl!

Red Rock Urban BBQ Outdoor Seating

Another patio I’ll have to try out now that we are getting some heat! Red Rock’s patio has a rock/glass wall that would be a great block on a day with some of that famous GP wind! Love smoked meats and southern BBQ?! This is the place to get it!

Another south-facing patio can be found at Original Joe’s Grande Prairie! You’re not going to be cold in the shade here! There are umbrellas however, just in case you go during a heat wave. One of my favorite local coffee shops! The food I’ve tried there (the Mill District Jeffrey’s) has always been delicious as well! Jeffrey’s also has 3 locations around town…in 214 Place downtown (the tall black building for you out-of-towners), in the library (Montrose Cultural Centre), and in the Mill District. The Mill District one is large and has the patio…I’m not sure if the others do.

Happy hour runs everyday from 3-6 pm and 8 pm to close. Half price wine and gin and Buy one Get one Free seasonal espressos and teas are some of the happy hour menu items! And Tuesdays are the day for 30% off Charcuterie Boards!

Red Willow Falls Location

The trailhead to Red Willow Falls is located about 100 kilometers out of Grande Prairie, AB. Several of the roads are gravel to get there, so plan on taking around an hour and 15 mins or so each way driving. The closest village is Elmworth. I didn’t notice any gas stations on the drive so fill up before you go!

The actual hike itself is only about 1.2 kms one-way, but we spent a couple hours walking, having a snack, and enjoying the beauty of the falls and Red Willow Creek!

Directions to Red Willow Falls Trailhead

The easiest way to get to Red Willow Falls is just to enter these coordinates into maps on your phone or in your vehicle:

Or, follow these driving directions to Red Willow Falls:

• Take Highway 43 West out of Grande Prairie towards Beaverlodge for about 30 km (from west end of town)
• Turn left on Highway 667 (west) for 6.6 kms
• Take a left onto 722 South for 18.2 kms (*you will pass McNaught Homestead)
• Turn right onto 722 West at the Hinton Trail Hall (sign for Elmsworth); follow for 11.3 kms
• Turn left onto Range Road 121, follow for 3.2 kms
• Turn right onto Township Road 700 and drive for 20.1 kms
• Take the dirt road on your right (you will be just past the border in BC for a bit then the road swerves over back into AB) for 6.2 kms then you will see a dirt pullout on the left where you can park and access the red willow falls trailhead (when we went this was the end of the road since there was a locked gate blocking off the rest of this narrow gravel road.

Beware! Don’t follow googles directions unless you put in the coordinates! After following their directions on my phone, we eventually came to a narrow dirt road that ended up in a locked gate! So, we had to backtrack in order to cross the creek and continue on the other side of it. Which ended up being about a 45 minute detour!

What to Expect on the Red Willow Falls Trail

The Red Willow Falls Trail is a rather short 1.2 km hike in. Most of the trail is quite flat and easy. There is only one short section of the trail you will need to scramble (or slide) down. Update: This steep section can be avoided by taking another trail down!

I suggest you wear good walking/hiking shoes! Also, allow 4 hours or more for the whole trip so it is not rushed. Bring snacks, water, and bear spray because you will be out in the toolies with possibly no one else on the trail!

And please bring a plastic bag and carry out all garbage! There are no garbage cans or picnic tables on this trail so plan accordingly.

Beginning of the trail

The first part meanders through the trees and had some soft areas even in the dry fall when we went.

Shortly after, it opens up to a viewpoint over Red Willow Creek. There is another trail that heads on into the trees away from the creek which is the quad trail (or easier route) down to the falls. Next time we will take this trail down and probably do the steep section on the way back. That way it is a loop instead of the same trail both ways!

Note: If you need a good baby/toddler carrier I strongly suggest the ergo-baby! I love mine…it has great support so my back never hurts and the straps are super padded so they don’t cut in. I’ve even used it to carry my big toddler on our Tumbler Ridge hikes! .

Caution: Steep Section

The steep section may take awhile to descend. This part of the trail is through the trees, so there is a rope tied between to help you get to the bottom. The kids all made it on their own (in fact they loved the challenge!). I had baby in a carrier strapped on me and had to take it really slow but made it safely as well. My legs were burning a little though since I was bent close to the ground just in case I slipped!

Last Half of the Red Willow Falls Trail

For the last half of the trail, you can either keep walking in the trees beside Red Willow Creek (on the actual trail) or down by the water on the shale. The kids skipped along by the creek and went down to look and touch the water. The creek had plenty of shallow areas and would be ideal in the summer!

Red Willow Falls

The actual waterfall on the red willow falls trail isn’t very big – but there is a small drop into a deep looking hole. There are flat rocks at the top beside the waterfall that the kids enjoyed sitting on to watch the water splash into the pool below. One man was fishing beside the fall and caught a fish while we were there much to the delight of the kidlets.

Apparently you can jump off the cliffs into the pool below. Whether you’re into jumping or just want to swim in the hole, be aware of unstable cliff edges! Don’t swim under any ledges and careful where you sit (or jump) at the top of the falls.

Best time of year to Visit Red Willow Falls, Alberta

The first part of the trail can be quite muddy in spring or if it’s recently rained. Due to spring runoff, the creek (or river) can also be quite high and turbulent. So be aware of that! Plus, the bears are always hungriest in spring after a long winter of starvation! Not that that stops me from engaging in spring hiking, I am just more aware and we are sure to carry bear scare devices.

We visited Red Willow Falls in autumn and the colors were vibrant! It was warm for fall yet still cool enough to keep us from sweating on our walk. The trail was also quite dry.

This summer I plan on going again on a hot day and spending the day so the kids can play in the water and have a picnic. The flat rocks and shallow little pools will be perfect even to find a spot for baby to splash around.

Other Activities Close to Red Willow Falls

Red Willow Falls may be out in the back-country a ways, but there are a few other sites of interest close to or on the way there. If you wanted to make a complete day trip, you could easily add in a few other stops. Here are a few places along the route to Red Willow Falls:

Red Willow Park Day Use Area – A nice spot down by the shallow creek that would be perfect on a hot day.

Red Willow Beach – sandy beach great for kids and a picnic. Directions: Go through the hamlet of Elmworth until the end of the pavement, Turn Right (there is a sign saying Rio Grande Rodeo), Turn left right before the big blue bridge

McNaught Homestead – A preserved homestead and 1 km boardwalk to McNaught Lake where you can see many types of waterfowl.

In Summary

The hike into Red Willow Falls is definitely worth spending an afternoon if you live in GP or even Dawson Creek. While the falls aren’t super big, the hike is nice and the shale creek bed is picturesque. The shallow creek would even be a great spot to splash around in the summer and have a picnic. I could see myself making a day out of it this summer! Hopefully I’ll see you there!

So I bought some avocados and made my “lazy-man” version of a chocolate avocado pudding. It is sweet, satisfying, and oh so smooth! Plus, it is way healthier than a regular chocolate pudding recipe!!! In fact, this is the only pudding I make my kids.

All you need is 4 ingredients:

• Avocados
• Cocoa Powder
• Real Maple Syrup (or other sweetener)*
• Water (Optional if you like it thick)

*You could sweeten this with honey, coconut sugar (although may not be as smooth), or even dates that have been softened by soaking in water. I like maple syrup because it blends in easily. I’m all about making recipes simpler…if there’s too many steps involved, I probably won’t make it!

Lazy-Man’s Easy Healthy Chocolate Avocado Pudding Recipe

• 3 Avocados
• 1/4 cup or more of Maple Syrup
• 4 Tbsp. Cocoa Powder or more to taste
• Water

Directions: Add avocados, real maple syrup and organic cocoa powder to blender. Blend. Add more Cocoa powder or syrup until you reach desired sweetness/ chocolatey flavor! Add a little water at a time until you achieve desired consistency. I usually start with about 1/4 cup.

Note: I always eyeball my measurements so they do not have to be exact!

I usually buy my maple syrup and organic cocoa powder (it is the Rodelle brand) from Costco. But, amazon also has good maple syrup and organic Cocoa powder if that is easier for you! (And the “Anthony’s” brand I’ve had before and liked).

*This recipe was inspired by using several different recipes off of Food.com and eventually using the ingredients I liked to come up with my own version!

Location

Real Mayab Hotel & Bungalows is located close to the small town of Kaua, Mexico and is approximately 20 kms from Chichen Itza and 21.5 kms from Valladolid.

The middle point (A) is where the Real Mayab Hotel & Bungalows is located, the left point B by the town of Piste is Chichen Itza and the point B on the right is Valladolid.  

Valladolid is a great, colonial gem to visit close-by as well!  If you would rather stay in the town of Valladolid, read my review of the hotel we stayed at and what you cannot miss in Valladolid!

Real Mayab Hotel & Bungalows was a great place to stay overnight and we enjoyed just walking the large gardens (with some animals to see!) and enjoying the tropical weather!  Read about the beachfront port town of Progreso and why you must visit here!

Our Room

The room was quite simple. Ours was mostly concrete with basic furnishings. It did have a fridge, small tv and a/c. The bathroom was a good size and had a big shower! I actually liked the simplicity of the coloured concrete in the shower although it was quite slippery when wet. So be careful after a shower! Our toddler slipped and got a good smack on the head. My Mom had a room in the main building up above reception. Her room was tiled and definitely had a more finished look so I am guessing the hotel is maybe gradually updating the rooms. Maybe the bungalows are getting tile work as well! We didn’t really care much though since we were in there just to sleep!

The Hotel Grounds & Pool

The Real Mayab Hotel & Bungalows’ grounds were beautiful!!! There was lots of room to stroll around and the place was quiet besides the chirping birds (and maybe my kids running, yelling everywhere!).

My littlest loved watching the 3 or 4 turtles swimming around a little pond and basking on logs!

There is also a large cage with several peacocks! Another cage down the trail appeared to be empty.

The pool deck was large and had plenty of lounge chairs. Watch your step, there are a few spots where the wood is rotting and getting soft. A little upkeep is needed. But overall it was fine. Those spots were mostly on the end (the stairs weren’t in the best shape) and off on the side where the kiddos weren’t really going. It’s convenient to have the restaurant up there and be overlooking it all. The pool was cold! But the kids didn’t care!

Restaurant

The food was good but the restaurant hours seemed a little sporadic! You may want to double check with the workers what hours it is open so you don’t end up with no food!!!

We went into town (Kaua) for supper just to check the place out. There only seemed to be a handful of restaurants on the main drag, so we settled on one with a moat and bridge. The moat/pond was in front so you had to cross over a bridge to get into the restaurant which was open air on the outside. It had a great ambience and was romantic looking, that is why we stopped. The chips and salsa were delicious as always! I had a shrimp pasta that I really enjoyed, and hubby liked the fajitas but I wouldn’t suggest the burgers! That’s what the kids ordered of course and hubby had to have a bite and said they weren’t very good. So, stick with Mexican food or pasta!

The kids enjoyed running along the bridge and watching the goldfish and ducks in the pond! So that entertaining factor was a good perk!

Overall Impression

When we arrived, there were very few guests around. Being such a big complex, it almost felt abandoned in a way. However, it became much busier closer to dark and by morning the parking lot was quite full.  So, I feel this hotel is mostly a place to stay on the way to somewhere else, like it was for us! To me this seemed sad and almost a waste! The Real Mayab Hotel & Bungalows looked like it was built to host large events and groups and have stuff happening. But there wasn’t. That being said, if you’re traveling with a large group of people and want to have the place mostly to yourselves (and be close to the famous Chichen Itza Mayan ruins) this would be it! It also was a great price and the grounds were awesome for the kids!

We paid around $80 CAD (about $60 USD) when we went.  The prices were similiar on several sites, however I booked on since they had the added perk of getting a free night every 10 nts (so about 10% savings).

Lost Earrings!

One negative was that I had left some diamond stud earrings (an anniversary gift … oops) on the nightstand by our bed. I called the hotel, they talked to the cleaner on duty that day, but were told nothing was found. I even stopped in at the hotel on our way back (a week later) just to take a look and ask again. They let me in our old room so I could look around in case they fell on the floor but no such luck! I don’t want to assume anything, (and I’m definitely not putting the blame on the hotel!) but I’m guessing someone has a new pair of earrings!! I know for a fact I had left them on that nightstand the night before we checked out!! So, I recommend not leaving those small earrings anywhere except safely in your luggage. They’re definitely an easy item to forget!

Overall, I definitely recommend the Real Mayab Hotel & Bungalows for the beautiful grounds, pool, and large suntanning deck! It is also in an awesome location close to Chichen Itza and a good price for the budget conscious family – or anyone!  And, you might want to consider checking out one of my favorite beach towns – Progreso!  It is about a two hour drive from Real Mayab Hotel & Bungalows!
