We also use Aeroplan points or AirMiles when we can for flights (best value), and Scotia Rewards for travel credit towards AirBnBs and rental cars. I have also used AirMiles before to rent a car and the value was ok.
Travel Hacking Tools
Prince of Travel – has excellent advice for Canadians on how to get lots of points so you can get flights for cheap (or almost free)!
Online Shopping: If I am about to buy anything online, I first see if I can go through the Aeroplan or AirMiles website to gain extra points.
I also check any online shops on rakuten and Great Canadian Rebates to see if they offer cash back.
